Mr Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury is an injured freedom fighter, a wounded veteran of our war of independence. He fought our liberation war as an Army Captain and lost his leg. He was awarded second highest gallantry award for living war heroes, Bir Bikram. Mr. Chowdhury retired from active military duty January of 1975 and joined foreign services, where he climbed up the ladder by means of his efficiency as a diplomat. He served as Bangladesh ambassador to different countries including USA, Germany, Vietnam etc. He also served five years as Foreign Secretary of Bangladesh.

Mr. Shamsher M Chowdhury and the likes of him are welcome new face of BNP. This is sharp contrast to the faces of Nizami or Mujahid flanking BNP leader Khaleda.

Those who like to see a better Bangladesh, those who wants a tolerant functioning democracy under strong two party parliamentary system, should welcome a smarter, secular new leadership in BNP. In this regard Mr Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury is a perfect candidate for a new fresh face in BNP our educated elites love to talk about.

Mr Chowdhury was standing near a peaceful protest site near Mohakhali during June 27 general strike, when he was whisked away by plain clothed police/ RAB forces. Despite lack of cases against him, he was taken to police remand for a day. The allegation by police against him was ridiculous to its highest extent.

This is how it was reported in a vernacular newspaper,

So after one day remand, which means torture under police custody, when Mr Chowdhury was granted bail by the higher court, he was re-arrested at jail-gate tonight. Citing same reason, ‘attempting to attack and kill policemen’.

One main complain of the urban elites about BNP was it’s backward looking face with Nizami, Mujahid escorting Khaleda Zia. Even 18 months into this government, when institution after institution are being ruined by blatant politicization, when media after media are being gagged for daring speak out against government atrocities; these elites chattering class preferred to keep their talking points limited to need for new faces in BNP or BNPs need to return to parliament.

Ruling Awami League, for it’s petty political interest, likes to keep BNP image that of a Nizami Mujahid flanked Khaleda image. And when a person like Mr Chowdhury comes to forefront of BNP politics, the government not at all likes it. Awami Leagues loves to portray BNP as Falu- Nizami combine. They feel vulnerable when people like Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury start coming forward as Khaleda’s leading advisor. Hence they try to harass and ruin the career of this new political face by brute force.

When ruling party tries to harass and ruin the career of this new political face by brute force, it was expected of the educated elites to finally speak up. But so far they have not done so. The media that speak for this class still blindly supports the ruling party and are cahoots in hiding their atrocities. Like fiddling Nero, they are still talking about BNP’s need to join parliament, BNP’s need to get rid of Jamaat etc.
