দেশ ছেড়েছি এক যুগ হোল, তাই গত বারটি পহেলা বৈশাখ কেটেছে দেশের বাইরেই। এই বার বছরে দেশের অনেক বড় বড় পরিবর্তন হয়েছে, এর মধ্যে আন্যতম হচ্ছে পহেলা বৈশাখ উদযাপন।
যখন দেশ ছেড়েছিলাম, পহেলা বৈশাখ তখন ছিল কলেজ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ক্যাম্পাস কেন্দ্রিক বড় নগরগুলোর কিছু সাংস্কৃতিক বৈদগ্ধ নাগরিকের বার্ষিক বিনোদোন। ঢাকার রমনার বটমূল অথবা চট্টগ্রামের ডিসি হিলে ভোর থেকে রবীন্দ্র সংগীত পরিবেশন হোত আর সহস্র অনধিক মানুষ তা উপোভোগ করতেন। নাগরিক এই রিচুয়াল টার শুরু হয়েছিল পাকিস্তান আমলের শেষের দিকে, ৬৭ ইংরেজী সনে। আইয়ুব সরকার কর্তৃক রবীন্দ্র সংগীত নিষিদ্ধ করার প্রতিবাদে ছায়ানট বাংলা নববর্ষকে রবীন্দ্র সংগীত দিয়ে বরন করে নেয়ার সিদ্ধান্ত নেয়।
দেশের গ্রামে যা হোত তা হোল বৈশাখী মেলা। তখন তো যোগাযোগ ব্যাবস্থা এত ভাল ছিল না, বৈশাখী মেলাই ছিল গ্রামের মানুষের জন্য শহুরে মনোহরী পন্য সামগ্রী ক্রয়ের একমাত্র সুযোগ।
গঞ্জে বাজারে হোত হালখাতা। হালখাতা মানে হচ্ছে মিলাদ অথবা পুজো পার্বনের মাধ্যমে ব্যাবসায়ীদের নুতন বছর নুতন হিসেবের খাতা খোলা। মিলাদ অথবা পুজো উপলখ্যে উপস্থিত সবাইকে মিষ্টি অথবা বিরিয়ানী দেয়া হোত।
পহেলা বৈশাখ উদযাপনে ব্যাপক পরিবর্তন এসেছে গত এক যুগে। নগরের গুটিকতক সাংস্কৃতিক বৈদগ্ধ মানুষের বার্ষিক রবীন্দ্র সংগীত বিনোদোন থেকে পহেলা বৈশাখ এখন শহর, মফস্বল, গঞ্জের মানুষের এক সার্বজনীন উৎসবে পরিনত হয়েছে। রমনা এলাকা অথবা ডিসি হিল এলাকা গুলো পরিনত হয়ে নগরবাসীর মিলন মেলায়। এখন সমাজের সর্বস্তরের মানুষ যোগ দিয়েছে বাংগালীর এই উৎসবে।
শিশু, কিশোর, তরুন, তরুনী, বৃদ্ধ, বৃদ্ধা মুখে আলপনা একে ঘুরে বেড়াচ্ছে। নগরীর লেকে মংগল প্রদীপ ছাড়া হচ্ছে হাজার হাজার। বিভিন্ন আকারের কাঠের তৈরী পাখী, পশু ইত্যাদির প্রতিকৃতি, ভংকর দর্শন কিছু মুখোশ নিয়ে বিশাল শোভাযাত্রা ঘুরছে রাজপথ ধরে।
এগুলো কিন্তু কোনটাই আবহমান বাংলার ঐতিহ্য নয়। মংগল শোভাযাত্রা বলুন আর মুখে আলপনা আকা বলুন, এগুলো কোনদিন ই গ্রাম বাংলার পহেলা বৈশাখ এর অংশ ছিল না। কিন্তু মানুষ খুব দ্রুতই এগুলোকে নিজেদের প্রানের উতসব হিসেবে গ্রহন করে নিয়েছে। আসলে আমাদের মুসলমান বাংগালী সমাজে সত্যিকারের উৎসবের খুব ই অভাব। ঈদ একটা খুব ই ঘরোয়া উৎসব। পহেলা বৈশাখ হয়ত আমাদের উৎসবের অভাব ঘুচাবে।
আজ খবরে দেখলাম প্রত্যন্ত অঞ্চলের এক বৈশাখী মেলায় এক শিশুর মুখে আলপনা আকা হচ্ছে। আমাদের কাছে পহেলা বৈশাখ এখন আর আবহমান গ্রাম বাংলার ঐতিহ্য উদযাপন নয়। পহেলা বৈশাখ এখন চারকলা চত্বরে উদ্ভাবিত সংস্কৃতির গ্রাম বাংলার বিজয়।

This shows the hollowness of the claims of cultural fundamentalists, of both আবহমান বাঙ্গালী সংস্ৃতি and ইসলামী তেহজিব তমুদ্দুন kind. Living cultures are dynamic. They evolve, in complex and multifaceted ways. Some aspects of the evolution process we might not like. But as long as no one is imposing anything on anyone, it’s all cool. And as you say: মানুষ খুব দ্রুতই এগুলোকে নিজেদের প্রানের উতসব হিসেবে গ্রহন করে নিয়েছে।
There are many examples of this kind of evolution. The language that you and I write in is based on what Tagore wrote 100 years ago. No one made us adopt it, we (or our parents and grandparents) chose it volunteerily. Maybe someday there will be another writer who’ll write in a different way, and we (or our children and grandchildren) will write in that language. As long as people make these choices volunteerily, it’s all cool. তাই না?
এটা ঠিক যে আমরা এখন নিয়মিত পহেলা বৈশাখ পালন করি… কিন্তু কত দিনের জন্য? দশ দিন পর কাউকে জিজ্ঞেস করলেই কেউ বলতে পারেনা ঐ দিন বাংলা তারিখ কত? ৩৬৪ দিন বাংলা সাল ভুলে গিয়ে একদিন মনে রাখাটা তো ঠাট্টা করার মত। যারা এখনও বাংলা সালকে ধরে রেখেছে সেই গ্রামের মানুশগুলোই জানে বাংলা সালের মাহাত্ম্য, তাইনা? শহুরে জীবনে এইটা কেবল মাত্র একটা ফ্যাশান।
Jyoti, your are 100% right. Culture isn’t anything static and stale. It’s dynamic and progresses and refines in every moment. It’s of evolutionary nature and doesn’t change through revolution. It can’t be imposed upon and or it can be cleaned or brushed off in dramatic way throgh decree or by whims of rulers.
What comes naturally is cool, yet sometimes we get something bad in natural way. Like, we get diseases or calamities by nature’s choices.
Culture is the combination of everything what a defined population do or possess in their collective lives. It embodies everything in our phyiscal, social and psychic realms.
Language is one of the big elements of cultre and so are the religions. We can’t at ease strip off any layer of cultural influences. There is nothing in the world without its fine and flip sides. Every culture has some harmful things naturally secretive or hidden. When the chasms of cultural elements gradually get exposed people try to get rid of them through slow process like the way it get enmassed in years or centuries. Sometimes, the cultural fundamentalists try conserve the bad parts of culture becuase they see them as the symbol of pride of culture. But the time wins over them and the fundamentlists get funked, old bad things vanish opeining the new cultrual goodies to be assimilated in the cullture. The natural way of bidding farewell to bad and welcoming to good is really cool. It’s dynamic, self-creative and self-thriving. Cultural fundamentalism is somewhat incorrect politically like all other fundamentalisms.
I, believe, eating rice is a very fundamental element of our culture though, it will one day wean off itself for other healthy foods. And Moeen’s potato will engrain in our food culture one day, but Moeen will be minused long before that time.
I concur with you 100 % on it. For the betterment of humanity a superior culture should be adopted universally but not be imposed. In a never ending learning process, especially in the context of FINDING MEANS TO SUPPORT ENDS/EXISTENCE, imposing one’s liking on another either on gun point or through blackmail is bound to fail because some GREAT SOULS in alternate-electronic Medias have made people many folds conscious than even at the era of 70s. Having said that I want to ask if anyone could prove other existing religion/culture (Be it Hinduism, Cristiniaty, Judaism or Jainism) in the GLOBE more tolerant, vibtant and superior in livelihood than ISLAMIC CULTURE. If not than aren’t we lucky to have the best as granted?
