Please see below the screenshots of the main page ( Cover page) of most of the major Bangladeshi newspapers published today.
These newspapers also include the former mouth pieces of two feuding political parties. Their ideology spectrum is wide and diverse and include center-left-secular-progressive, center-right, far right-bigot, far left partisan views.
However all of them had a common theme today. Almost all newspapers gave banner heading treatment with a central front page picture of General Moeen U Ahmed. No, he did not save this planet from immediate annihilation by a meteor. He is visiting USA and spoke in a reception hosted by a hitherto unknown Bangali diaspora organization.
And you still want me to believe that Bangladesh is not under a de facto martial law?
OK, below are the cover pages of most of the newspapers published in Bangladesh this morning. You yourself can judge.

Its hard to buy this kind of coverage. Moeen doesnt need to become President, he already gets more coverage than the President.

Shameless blog promotion, yes. But I’d like to have people’s comments on the video: http://dhakashohor.blogspot.com/2007/10/general-moeens-q-in-london.html

And still we don’t see a word about the recent monitoring of internet or about the detention of Arifur Rahman. One fellow blogger contacted a journalist of a local newspaper, he said admin will not allow report on these issues. Rsf contacted the Daily Star, yet to get a reply. Is there some way to bang on the media’s head to find an answer?

When you press the susheel-progressive supporters of the coup about why they continue to hide behind the fiction of constitutional continuity, they say that it could be worse, Masud could take over, or the mid-ranking Islamists may turn us into a Pakistan. And Amader Shomoy and its ilk are calling for Moeen to provide the nation with dik-nirdeshona. The common perception is that Moeen is a moderate and scholarly type who doesn’t want to take over, while Masud is the hot-headed one who launched the coup in January. And many, including most of the regulars here, bought this line.
I wonder if this perception is true. Why do we think Moeen is a moderate? Because he acknowledges Mujib as the founding father? Because he said that war criminals should be tried? And why is Masud the hot-headed one? Because he punched someone on 1/11? Because he is related with Khaleda? Or is it the ridiculous red hair? Why is Moeen the scholarly type? Because he refered to Athenian democracy in a seminar attended by academics?
Well talk is cheap. What action justifies Moeen’s moderate reputation? And where is Masud anyway?

Jyoti, This is one of the biggest problems of us. Basically every one is complaining our democratic institutions is not developed. It is very true. But As you see on Rumi Bhai’s post, It is quite clear that our media, intellects, political leaders are sometimes
behaving like that Army is God.
So we are facing this day

Pictures are worth a thousand words, and the screenshots pretty much capture the state of Bangladesh today.

is it very much objectionable to see Mr. Moyeen having this coverage, that is, importance ? Both Hasina and Khaleda, rather say, AL and BNP are responsible for the present situation. Al is one step ahead; it always rushed to foreigners complain against home. The corruption, loot, anarchy and backing the terrorists culminated in the military-backed govt. in Bangladesh. Was this fact unexpected to them ? Former USA ambassador Harry K.Thomas forewarned Bangladeshis against this. Many of the intellectuals, and the “Shushil Shamaj” can’t deny having role in this situation of Bangladesh.

Jodi Kisu Moneye Naa Koren Amar Kisu Ekhane Bolbar Ase [if you don't mind I have something to say here].
My question is how the so called civil society got its name. The individuals who are known by self-taken civil-society members, what are their number? Maybe couple of scores, or hundreds or at best thousand. Do those so called civils think 140 millions minus few scores or hundreds of civils, all the rest are uncivil. I’m very much indignant about them. Those city-based civils have no respect for the rest of the people, especially those in the villages. If they had, they could have taken this extremely derogatory uncivil name. If I had been in the country I would have sued them about that unholy classified name. Where are those civils or shushils now. Pre 1/11 all the drama-scenes and subequent 1/11 are the result of their unholy alliance with the conspirators of indegenious or exotic origin. Are they hibernating now or baking some other poisonous Chaala-bread for the nation?
About Gen. Moeen by appearance looks like someone sober gentle but I feel bad about him when I see he has been constantly lying to the nation. Whatever good things he can do in this shortspan of 24 months like containing corruption, seperating judiciary, reforming election commission to present levelled playing field, reforming ACC or political parties etc will be appreciated by People. But at the same time people will remember how is stupifying people. He said the military are not running the country. As Rumi said, everybody see it, know it, feel it and understand it very well they are the defacto players of government using the civil facade of puppet care-taker advisory committe. It is shame to call this goverment CTG. They can be better called PIG[paramilitary interim government]/MIG[military inerim government/RIG [reformist interim governmnet]. Who is all the time talking through, who is gettig more coverage, Moeen or Fukruddin! Who is giving policy guidelines for the government. When Mr. Moeen talks, he very assertively talks about the policy issues of the government about reform, about corruption, when and how many will be in the list and when to stop this listing and nabbing, how they would be tried or who would be the FON or who would be the BON [brother of Natioin] or who would be the DON [Declarer of Nation]. We see, everything is coming from the same mouth whereas when asked about their role, he just shy away their kingly-role. This slippery style is sipping away his crdibility. I don’t understand why he lies about and why he doesn’t come forth with truth instead of its travesty. Perhaps, they don’t want to take the brunt of the blame, in case CTG fails.
But Mr. Moeen must keep in minds if CTG succeeds all the accolades will be for them and if fails no commission truth or lie will be able save them. They have to be accountable or looking for own-minus formula or self-exile with public indictment on the heads.
Thanks.

Moeen is following the foot steps of Ershad with his statements and clarification filled with lies.
Yesterday, he claimed that he never took a loan of 99,69,215/- and he never paid back over 66 lakh taka within one year.
According to the prospectus of trust bank limited.
Moeen had a outstanding balance of 99,69,215/- as on Dec 31, 2005.
His outstanding amount went down to 33,15,323/- as on Dec 31, 2006.
